Safe response basics
Emergency spill response
Follow your site procedures and only intervene when it is safe to do so. For a major spill or immediate danger, isolate the area and contact the appropriate emergency response support.
2 Stop the source
If safe, close valves or stop pumps and upright leaking containers. Never put yourself at risk to stop a leak.
3 Contain
Use absorbent socks or booms to limit spread and protect drains, soil, waterways and sensitive areas.
4 Absorb
Apply absorbent pads or loose absorbent suitable for the material and allow sufficient time for absorption.
5 Clean
Collect used absorbents using suitable tools and PPE. Use an approved cleaning product where appropriate.
6 Dispose
Manage contaminated absorbents and PPE in accordance with site procedures and applicable waste requirements.
